The accumulation of mould and mildew is a common problem for furniture placed outdoors or in a damp environment. Mould is known to be a toxic substance that can have serious ill effects on one's health. In addition, mildew stains leave unpleasant discolourations on items. Written below are some steps to help you fix these problems before they can do permanent damage to yours furnishings and your health.
Begin by cleaning mould and mildew from wood furniture with common household ingredients. Create a cleaning solution by filling a bucket halfway with cool water. Then, mix two cupfuls of bleach in the water. Don on disposable plastic safety gloves and a chemical fume mask to protect against the smell of bleach.
Bring the furniture to a properly ventilated area. Place a tarp on your work area to prevent the floor from being stained. Next, soak a scrub brush with strong bristles in the water with the bleach. Commence scrubbing on the affected spot. If it does not remove easily, wait for ten minutes and then scrub again with a bit more bleach.
Fill another bucket with clean water and add a generous cupful of mild dish detergent. Once that is done, you need to soak a scrub brush in the soapy water and then begin re-scrubbing your furniture. If detergent does not work, use a mild alkali such as trisodium phosphate. For the latter, use about eight to ten tablespoons for every gallon of water. With these easy steps, you can be sure that your furniture would never have to host potentially lethal mould and mildew.
